The effects of sleep on overall health and wellness, the importance of the Antibiotic Stewardship Programs in the Military Health System and the global health engagement of Southern Partnership Station 2018 were just a few of the topics covered on day two of the 2019 Navy and Marine Corps Public Health (NMCPH) Conference, being held in Hampton, Va. March 26-28. One presentation in particular highlighted an ongoing collaboration between the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC), health analysis (HA) and epidata center (EDC) departments, which started in January 2018.

Cmdr. Roy Hoffman, BUMED M95 branch head, aerospace medicine programs and Jessica Newton, lead epidemiologist, NMCPHC HA, presented “Bringing Data to the Flight Line, Part One: History and Overview of Naval Aviation’s #1 Safety Issue, Physiologic Events”. The second of these presentations was held by Amanda Price, epidemiologist, EDC, NMCPHC, and Christina Shibley and Sarah DeShields, epidemiologists, HA, NMCPHC, titled “Bringing Data to the Flight Line, Part Two: The Population Health Approach to Exploring Physiologic Events”.

A physiologic event (PE) occurs when someone experiences dizziness, visual impairment or altered mental status due to various engineering and human factors. These teams are focusing their research on the health of aviation populations including healthcare utilization, demographics and other selected personal health indicators that could be contributing factors of PE occurrences.

According to the presenters, “NMCPHC is at the forefront in better understanding how aviator health may relate to PEs. This is a great example of how public health, and more specifically, population health and epidemiologic methods, can be used to help investigate a pressing issue for the Navy and Marine Corps. It’s a team effort for sure, and combines our efforts with those of NAVAIR, BUMED, Navy Safety Center and Navy Medicine Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-D).”

Understanding PEs is a top priority for Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), DoD and national leadership in order to both predict and ultimately prevent PEs. NMCPHC’s engagement in this effort ensures Navy analytic experts provide the data necessary to improve aviator readiness.
