Today, the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) kicked off the annual Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Conference, Hampton, Va, March 26-28.

During the next three days, over 515 conference attendees will take part in multidisciplinary discussions, presentations and poster sessions surrounding the conference theme, “The Future of Naval Force Health Protection in a Changing Landscape”. This theme has been part of the military public health conversation throughout the course of the year and frames the goals for the conference.

“This conference is a great opportunity to gather public health professionals from all over the world in one place, to share best practices and to either meet new colleagues for the first time or renew relationships with old shipmates. This collaboration and the information presented here not only makes the public health practitioners better at their craft but also improves the readiness and health of the Navy and Marine Corps team. I could not be prouder than to be associated with such an amazing group of professionals and for NMCPHC to host this conference,” said Capt. Todd Wagner, commander, NMCPHC, while preparing for the conference.

The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Conference aims to provide cross collaboration and communication on military-specific public health issues, as well as professional development and training to develop skills and achieve required competencies.

“What you do really touches the fleet and Marine force, you are at the center of gravity for what Navy Medicine is doing now, and in the future, keep up the great work,” said Rear Adm. Terry Moulton, deputy surgeon general and deputy chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, in his remarks during the opening ceremony of the conference.

Over the course of the conference, active duty military and civilian specialists will take part in various knowledge-sharing discussion and educational sessions focused around Navy public health topics within the areas of occupational health, industrial hygiene, preventive medicine, health promotion, risk communications and operational medicine.

"What a great opportunity to be at a convention when we’re amongst our peers to share ideas that are happening in our fields. It’s a great opportunity to share ideas with each other to help the Navy move forward,” said Ed Deguia, health educator, health promotion and wellness, NMCPHC.

In addition to Wagner and Moulton’s opening remarks on the 26th, attendees will hear from Vice Adm. Raquel Bono, director, Defense Health Agency, on the second day of the conference.

NMCPHC is excited to continue collaboration and professional development across military and public health at the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Conference in 2020.

NMCPHC’s mission is to provide leadership and expertise to ensure mission readiness through disease prevention and health promotion in support of the National Military Strategy.
