ZAGAN, Poland -- The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division’s communication section and Charlie Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div., worked together to enable the brigade to command and control its forces across Europe here on March 19.

Their efforts were in support of Foundation 3, a command post exercise that validated the brigade’s ability to establish and maintain communications while planning complex operations on the move. The communications section, also known as the S-6, is the HHC, 1 ABCT section responsible for a multitude of systems that enable disparate elements to shoot and move as one force.

“We work with the brigade S-6… We help them and they help us so that we can mesh and integrate together,” said 2nd Lt. Donovan Thompson, 2nd Platoon Leader Charlie Company, 1st Engineer Battalion. “The training is preparing us to efficiently jump from one area to the next.”

During the exercise, S-6 and and C Co. established the Brigade Tactical Operations Center (TOC), a mobile command post that is used for planning and information sharing. The TOC includes a myriad of equipment including radios, satellites, generators, cables, and complex command systems that make setting up and moving a challenging process.

“Everyone wants the setup to occur quickly, but doing it the right way is the best way,” said Spc. Kierra Wheeler, communications specialist with S-6, HHC, 1st ABCT, 1st Inf. Div. “We all pitch in and help no matter what the job is.”

The rapid movement of the TOC enabled Devil Brigade to receive orders from its higher headquarters, quickly develop a plan, and send orders to its subordinate battalions.

“Communications are a vital component to the mission; without signal there is no way to access the tools needed to support the mission,” said Sgt. Donald Andrew, platoon Sgt. of C. Co., 1st Eng. Bat. “Being here in Poland brings to fruition my purpose and why I do what I do as a Signal Corps Soldier.”
