As of March 1, the Range and Training Area Management (RTAM) Division has moved from building 54 to building 1043. With the move being delayed for so long, the staff is excited for what the new building brings.
“If you’ve ever been to a range safety officer class, you know how packed that classroom can get,” said Chip Olmstead, director of RTAM division. “Now, we have a place that is probably twice the size where we can entertain 65-70 Marines comfortably and everyone either has a seat, table or a desk. It creates a more professional environment.”
RTAM is made up of three branches: range control, range maintenance and range development. Of these three, range control is the primary function of the RTAM Division for any current training.
“Range control is responsible for the scheduling, coordinating and supervision of training that occurs aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune,” said LtCol Richard Yudt Jr., infantry officer, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “When folks think Range Control, we fall under [the director], of the RTAM.”
For RTAM, the primary focus is to support the warfighter.
“For ops and plans, their main focus is on the things you would associate with being the mayor of a small city,” Olmstead said. “They run the base fire department, police department, infrastructure and weather calls. They are everything that keeps the base running, but this is everything that is directly related to support the tenant commands of the warfighters.”
With the move into the new building, RTAM is able to serve the tenant commands more efficiently. Instead of placing ground-training simulators in temporary locations with rudimentary facilities, the RTAM complex has a dedicated simulator building.
“The intent was to build the sim building,” Olmstead said. “Well, my predecessor saw that this was an opportunity where we can modernize and replace building 54 in terms of range control.”
The project in total cost 37 million dollars. With a brand new complex, the RTAM Division is able to support the warfighter in every clime and place.
Located adjacent to the brig on Duncan Street in the industrial area, the facility is easily recognizable by the large communications tower immediately adjacent to the building. Parking is provided for visitors and guests in the south parking lot.
