GRAFENWOEHR TRAINING AREA, Germany— U.S. Army Soldiers and North Atlantic Treaty Organization allied and partner nations came together as the Theatre Surface Fire Command during Dynamic Front 19, March 4-8, 2019 at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany.

The TSFC, led this year by the 197th Field Artillery Brigade with the New Hampshire National Guard, is a U.S. Army Europe Fires element concept to plan, coordinate and execute joint and allied fires through organizational mission command. It coordinated fires alongside allied and partner nations for several multinational division artilleries in Poland, Germany and Latvia.

“The TSFC is designed to synchronize and integrate fires across the entire theatre on behalf of the [Coalition Forces Land Component Command],” said U.S. Army Col. Andrew Anderson, brigade commander of 197th FA Brigade and deputy commander of the TSFC. “It allows allies and partners to work alongside us.”

Planning and coordinating what would be the TSFC for this year’s Dynamic Front took months of training and preparation between the 197th FA Brigade and allied nations.

“We have 12 nations as part of the TSFC,” said Anderson. “We have integrated them as part of our staff and they are providing incredible knowledge and experience.”

The interoperability between NATO nations allows all involved an opportunity to understand how to work together in future scenarios.

“Working alongside our national allies and partners gives us a feel of how they work in the battlefield,” said 1st Lt. Shannon Snively, a battle captain with 197th FA Brigade. “Each section has their own battle drill so compiling that together makes things more fluent.”

Learning each other’s different capabilities has helped them come together and be stronger as one, she said.

Being able to be a part of Dynamic Front’s TSFC has been an invaluable and rewarding experience for 197th FA Brigade.

“The exercise has gone very well,” Anderson said. “An opportunity for us to do an overseas exercise with multinational partners and allies where we get to work through a new concept is something my Soldiers will remember for a long time.”
