GRAFENWOEHR TRAINING AREA, Germany—Soldiers with Division Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, and allied and partner North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nations participated in Dynamic Front 19, March 4-8, 2019 at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany.
Dynamic Front is an annual multinational exercise conducted by the U.S. Army in Europe designed to improve allied and partner nation ability to deliver long-range missile capabilities.
“This is a multinational field artillery formation consisting of seven battalions from seven different nations,” said U.S. Army Col. Brett Forbes, commander of Force Field Artillery Headquarters for Dynamic Front 19. “We take those seven different formations, put them all together and fight as one cohesive unit.”
The exercise highlights the ability for the 27 participating nations to work under the Theatre Surface Fires Command.
TSFC is a U.S. Army Europe fires element concept to plan, coordinate and execute joint and allied fires through organizational mission command. Dynamic Front 19 has the TSFC headquartered at GTA by 197th Field Artillery Brigade from New Hampshire National Guard, coordinating fires to 1st CAV and additional multinational DIVARTYs in Poland and Latvia.
“The French Detachment was embedded with DIVARTY throughout the exercise,” said Lt. Col. Charles Tardy-Joubert of the French Army. “Having all nations fighting together at the same point at the same time makes sense and it works.”
Dynamic Front 19 also provided U.S. Army Soldiers with an opportunity to learn from allied nations.
“[The French soldiers] helped me see the picture from a different perspective,” said U.S. Army Spc. Jerry McLemore, an intelligence analyst with DIVARTY, 1st CAV. “They helped me think the way they would think in the artillery to get their mission done.”
It is a unique experience and opportunity that they cannot replicate back at home station due to the many countries involved in the exercise, said Forbes.
Working through the exercise proved rewarding for all nations involved, with 1st CAV valuing all they learned from working with multiple nations.
“What [Dynamic Front] brings to entities and organizations like division artilleries, it gives them the opportunity to learn to fight in a multinational environment. That is invaluable,” said Forbes.
