SAN DIEGO -- After celebrating the national observance throughout the month of February, Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego wrapped up Black History Month with a ceremony on the TSC campus March 1.

Following this year's theme "Black Migrations," TSC San Diego celebrated historic movements made by African Americans and recognized the central role they have played in our nation’s history.

During the observance ceremony, Sailors from the TSC San Diego Diversity Committee discussed the causes and effects of the Great Migration between 1910 and 1970 and honored prominent black leaders such as Langston Hughes, Dr. Charles Drew, Jacob Lawrence, Jackie Robinson, and Brig. Gen. Clara Adams-Ender.

Command Master Chief Christopher Cline, TSC San Diego command master chief, tied the theme of migration into racial equality in the Navy today and expressed his pride on the progress made to ensure fair treatment for all.

“For us in the Navy, most have migrated under much different circumstances than those who moved during the Great Migration,” said Cline. “As you think of what state, country, or region you migrated from and your individual backgrounds I would like you to think about why you are here and why you chose to serve.”

Cline concluded his remarks by reemphasizing the standard that Sailors are judged only by performance and not at all by race.

“Today I am very proud to be in a Navy where we as people are not judged by the color of their skin but by the determination in our hearts.”
