ZAGAN, Poland -- Twenty-eight Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, participate in the latest iteration of Devil Sabot Academy in Zagan, Feb. 27. The academy takes two weeks and focuses on preparing the students for Master Gunner School.
The Devil Sabot Academy is designed to focus on the hardest parts of the Master Gunner School which has an average attrition rate of 70%. Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Coelho, the Brigade Master Gunner said that the course gives the students the opportunity to prove their ability to go to the full course. This is important because the full master gunner course takes four months and the brigade loses a Soldier during that time and pays for all additional school costs.
The 28 participating Soldiers must complete several prerequisites before they can get a seat in the class. They must be a qualified vehicle crew evaluator and instructor operator, have a GT score of at least 105 and pass at gunnery within 12 months.
Sgt. 1st Class Coelho also said that it takes a lot of work to get this far and because of the difficulty in the course the students really have to want it. Coelho said that may of the current students have seats in an upcoming master gunner course but first must pass this pre-course.
