Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3 Commander Visits USS Mobile Bay

Rear Adm. Michael Wettlaufer, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, visited the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), Feb. 25.

The purpose of the visit was for Wettlaufer to meet with the Sailors and thank them for the hard work they’ve been doing on this deployment, said Capt. Robert Bryans Jr., commanding officer of the Mobile Bay.

The visit consisted of tours through various departments and spaces. Each stop gave a chance for Sailor interaction. It also provided an opportunity for the crew to highlight some of the Mobile Bay’s key capabilities.

“The ship’s new Aegis baseline is highly advanced, and provides the carrier strike group long range integrated air and missile defense capabilities not seen in previous baselines. This ensures the John C. Stennis carrier strike group can carry out its mission,” said Bryans.

When speaking to the air-defense team, Wettlaufer discussed with the Sailors how what they are doing is enhancing his ability to certify the safety of the strike group.

Wrapping up his visit, Wettlaufer made a trip to the pilothouse, providing an opportunity to speak to the crew of the Mobile Bay over the ship’s speaker system.

“Thanks for your leadership out here, and making sure the Stennis is safe and the defense picture for the strike group is up to date,” said Wettlaufer to the crew. “Keep up the good work by helping your peers and shipmates, and like the John C. Stennis says, ‘Look Ahead’”.

The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
