There are moments throughout our lives that define us as people, the Marine Corps is no different. We’ve gathered some of the most impactful events in our corner of the world. Let’s see what happened at MCAS Cherry Point “On This Day.”
On July 24, 1968, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) welcomed Sgt. Maj. Edgar R. Huff as the 2nd MAW’s new sergeant major. Huff joined the Marine Corps in June 1942 and was one of the first African-Americans to earn the title of “U.S. Marine” at Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Huff quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the first African-American Marine to become a sergeant major. He retired in 1972, serving the last 17 years as a sergeant major. Huff spent two years as the 2nd MAW Sergeant Major before transferring to the III Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam in October 1970.
