SANTA ANA, Calif. – One by one, orange foam pucks shot out toward Mateo Macias. With his helmet securely fastened and a goalie glove on each hand, Macias tried feverishly to keep the pucks at bay and stop them from going in the net.

"It's harder than you think," said Macias, 11, who was one of about 20 youth participants, ages 6-12, in a California National Guard Child and Youth Program event at the Discovery Cube Orange County, Feb. 23, in Santa Ana, California.

During the three-hour event, children of California National Guard soldiers and airmen, along with their adult family members, worked their way through the Cube's exhibits, including Macias’ favorite, The Science of Hockey.

April Jensen, 10, found herself struggling to stay upright while battling 60+ mile per hour forces inside the science museum's hurricane wind tunnel. Jensen’s hair and the strings from her purple hooded sweatshirt whooshed around the enclosed interactive exhibit as people watched from the calm outside. The wind velocity continued to tick upwards before Jensen reached for the door.

“You get to see how windy it can get and if you can stand there,” said Jensen. “And if you can’t stand that much wind, you can just get out fast,” she said.

The event is one of about a dozen events the child and youth program events plans to hold throughout the state each year, said Nathali Duran, southern region coordinator for the program.

Duran, who recently joined the program, said the event was her first as a coordinator.

“I’m loving it today,” she said. “I was nervous, but it was a good nervous.”

Looking out across the cube’s second floor exhibits, she could tell the event was a success.

“It seems like the families are having fun,” Duran said. “You can tell they’re all into it.”

The Child and Youth Program is part of the National Guard’s Joint Child & Youth Services and is designed to create age-appropriate activities and enrichment programs that recognize the strengths and challenges that come from being the child of a National Guard soldier or airman.
