It’s been said after joining the military, service members become part of two families—the one they are born into and the one they choose to selflessly serve—so when it comes time for Marines to transfer to a new duty station, no matter the distance, family will always be there.

Such is the case for Sgt. Maj. Delwin K. Ellington, the top enlisted for Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron (MWHS) 3, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW), who bid farewell to the Marines and Sailors of MWHS-3 during his relief ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Feb. 26.

“Today in this ceremony, we get to honor one of our own… Sgt. Maj. Ellington was a leader in the squadron who has been a part of the heart and soul of what our unit has been for the past year… so thank you Delwin,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Albano, the commanding officer of MWHS-3. “The relationship between the CO and the sergeant major is incredibly important to strengthen the organization—I certainly reached that realization. Not only are you an advisor but you’re a mentor and, by default, have become a true friend.”

Ellington echoed the same sentiment in his remarks, “The relationship between myself and the commanding officer was something special, he is a man that cares deeply for his Marines, and that is something I will always admire.

“What I will miss the most about this unit are the young Marines,” Ellington continued. “Every time you get the opportunity to mold and shape the next generation, it is an opportunity that should be taken advantage of.”

During his tour with 3rd MAW, Ellington proudly served as the squadron sergeant major for both MWHS-3 and Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron [VMFA (AW)] 225.

According to Ellington’s Meritorious Service Medal citation, as the senior enlisted advisor for VMFA (AW)-225, his influence was instrumental in ensuring the squadron was combat effective and ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. His attributes measurably contributed to the success of the squadron’s Pacific region deployment by ensuring accountability and disciplined operations through bilateral exercises in three distinct countries, furthering the Marine Corps’ foreign military partnership goals with the Indonesian Air Force and Republic of Korea Air Force.

Transferring to MWHS-3, Ellington was tremendously influential in leading the squadron’s support in two Wing-level field exercises, standardizing drill, enhancing the squadron’s meritorious board process and honing the instruction standards at the Wing’s Corporal’s Course.

Ellington’s next endeavor is assuming the post as sergeant major of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC).

“You were selected as a sergeant major of the SPMAGTF because of your accomplishments, and we are very proud of you,” concluded Albano.
