JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Chief (MCM 14) arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, Feb. 26, for a port visit.

Chief is visiting Jakarta while operating in U.S. 7th Fleet to work with their Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) counterparts to strengthen regional security and stability, and enhance interoperability.

“Partnerships, especially persistent partnerships, enhance our ability to maintain peace and maritime stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” said Lt. Cmdr. Fred Crayton, commanding officer of Chief. “As such, the U.S. Navy is committed to continuing to engage and work side-by-side with our Indonesian Navy partners who are equally devoted to forging strength through solidarity.”

Upon arriving, the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) hosted a welcoming ceremony that included a sample of their culture with a traditional Indonesian dance. After the ceremony Crayton provided a tour of the ship to the Indonesian sailors that hosted the ceremony.

“The welcoming we received was very touching,” said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Thomas Patterson. “It makes me very excited to get out and explore the country.”

Chief is also in the region to honor the 77th anniversary of the World War II Battle of Sunda Strait, where the crews of USS Houston (CA 30) and HMAS Perth (D 29) lost their lives in battle.

Chief, part of Mine Countermeasures Squadron 7, is operating in the Indo-Pacific region to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response platform for contingency operations.
