The leaders of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division cased the brigade colors Saturday, March 23, 2019, during a ceremony at the Arrival/Departure Airfield Control Group, in preparation for the unit's deployment to Kuwait.

Brigade commander Col. Michael J. Simmering and Command Sgt. Maj. Samuel Rapp cased the colors in order to move them forward to Kuwait, where the brigade will serve in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

"The color casing ceremony really signifies the closure of the brigade here at Fort Carson, and the official deployment of the brigade to theater,” said Simmering. “When we get to Kuwait, we’ll uncase the colors there, signifying the very beginning of operations.”

The unit will replace 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team of the Mississippi National Guard. In the months leading up to deployment, Iron Brigade Soldiers conducted thorough readiness training, from exercises at Fort Carson's Pinon Canon Maneuver Site to a rotation at the National Training Center. This training, along with numerous battalion and company level ranges and exercises, ensured Soldiers were prepared and ready to support the mission.

“This brigade has been through a pretty significant preparation for this upcoming mission,” Simmering said. “This is the culmination of what really has been the last 15 months of the brigade preparing for future operations.”
Simmering expressed his gratitude to his Soldiers for their hard work in preparing for deployment, thanking them also for what they are about to accomplish overseas.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Colorado Springs community, and the Fort Carson leaders,” he added. “It’s been amazing the support we’ve gotten back here in the last 15 months, knowing this brigade was on a pretty short turn to go out the door once again. The Colorado Springs community and Fort Carson leadership have been extremely helpful as we’ve gone through this process and I just wanted the opportunity to thank everybody for that support.”
