The U.S. Army South Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program team visited Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, Jan. 14-17.
During the visit, the team held multiple SHARP trainings in the base theater to promote understanding of how to take care of a SHARP case as well as the roles, responsibilities, resources and expectations involved.
“The main purpose of the visit is to ensure that the command teams have everything possible in their toolkit to assist in supporting the (other) command teams and the sexual assault response coordinators,” said Richard Williams, U.S. Army South SHARP program manager.
The SHARP program aims to end sexual harassment and assault in the U.S. Army and promote the voices and rights of victims while working to develop a culture of discipline and consideration.
“An integral part of maintaining a culture of respect is looking out for each other,” said Col. Kevin Russell, Joint Task Force-Bravo commander. “If you see something happening, you are obligated to step in and do what is right.
“As brothers and sisters in arms, whether we call someone battle buddy or wingman, the underlying belief that we will have each other’s backs permeates throughout the fabric of the U.S. military and JTF-Bravo. For us to be a fully cohesive unit, we need to be able to trust that the person next to us is there for our wellbeing, no matter the situation”

Following this training, JTF-Bravo implemented a stand-down day to address all service members on Jan.25.
“It’s important we review the ‘rules of the road’ and everyone understand at Soto Cano we have a climate of dignity and respect and won’t stand for anything less,” said Russell. “We are all responsible for the prevention of sexual assault and harassment, and must have the personal courage to intervene, act and motivate other to take action when needed.”
