Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) announced its 2018 Sailor of the year at a Feb. 15 ceremony.

Navy Diver 1st Class Kyle M. Coughlin, assigned to SPAWAR’s Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific in San Diego, California, was named the command’s Sailor of the year.

“Year after year we witness tough competition from those who compete for SPAWAR Sailor of the year honors,” said SPAWAR Commander Rear Adm. Christian Becker. “This year was no different. Petty Officer Coughlin’s accomplishments in supporting our warfighters from seabed to space made him stand out in a field of extraordinary talent.”

From October 2017 to September 2018, Coughlin led eight Sailors in the execution of 24 deployment periods, resulting in 705 dives over 174 days of forward deployed diving operations. As a diving supervisor, he deployed for 117 days and led 124 dives in support of 11 chief of naval operations (CNO)-directed research, development, test and evaluation projects vital to fleet readiness and national security.

Coughlin, a native of Watertown, Wisconsin, entered the Navy in May 2009. He graduated from Basic Training Great Lakes, Illinois in July 2009. Coughlin completed Second Class Dive School in 2010 and First Class Dive School in 2016. He is qualified as a diving salvage warfare specialist and an expeditionary warfare specialist.

“I’d like to thank everyone I’ve been supported by throughout my career. Being recognized for all the hard work I’ve put forth in my job here at SPAWAR is a huge honor,” said Coughlin. “I’m incredibly humbled by the selection and I will continue to move forward with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and lead. I am proud to be a part of the Littoral Diving Unit and the projects we support are contributing to future capabilities for our Navy.”

“Petty Officer Coughlin is a stellar performer who demonstrates great professionalism and devotion to duty,” said SPAWAR Command Master Chief Pablo Cintron. “He is a high caliber diver supporting CNO-directed projects with a positive attitude and infectious motivation.”

Also rising to the top, the runners-up for SPAWAR Sailor of the year were:

    - Yeoman 1st Class Demont McMillian, SPAWAR Space Field Activity, Chantilly, Virginia
    - Electronics Technician 1st Class Joshua McClellan, Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, Charleston, South Carolina
    - Personnel Specialist 1st Class Phetsamy Sengdaoellis, SPAWAR Headquarters, San Diego, California

SPAWAR identifies, develops, delivers and sustains information warfighting capabilities supporting naval, joint, coalition and other national missions.
