Tyndall’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit is disposing of live ordnance damaged by Hurricane Michael. The operation, which began on Tyndall’s EOD range this week, will continue through March 8. Explosions may be heard in surrounding areas.
The operation poses no safety or health hazard to the public or environment.
Coordinated with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the disposal operation involves placing C4 countercharges to destroy hurricane-damaged munitions that can no longer be safely used, transported, or stored long term. This operation is essential to maintain a safe environment for the restoration and rebuild of Tyndall AFB.
The EOD unit conducts safety calculations prior to each detonation to determine that the proper amount of explosives are used. These safety measures ensure a safe separation distance is maintained in order to protect personnel and property for the public and the base. Any “blast waves” that are felt or heard, are extremely low-pressure (less than 0.05 psi), and will cause no harm to personnel or damage to structures.
The disposal operation focuses on safety. Through professional training conducted in a quality environment, Tyndall’s EOD unit will continue to strive for an accident free environment.
