“I am a first sergeant. My job is people—everyone is my business. I dedicate my time and energy to their needs; their health, morale, discipline and welfare.” – Air Force First Sergeant’s Creed
Members of the Kirtland Air Force Base First Sergeants Council performed another random act of kindness, February 15, by paying for haircuts and lunch at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
Random acts of kindness is a campaign that strives to increase morale and thank Airmen for their service by distributing First Sergeants Council funds back to the base community.
“We just want to show that we appreciate the things that our Airmen are doing on a daily basis,” said Senior Master Sergeant Daniel Burton 58th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant and Team Kirtland First Sergeants Council president.
Throughout the year the council will do other random acts of kindness, such as paying for gallons of gas or groceries at the commissary.
“This helps out a lot and this can make someone’s day,” said Staff Sgt. Rommel Jarrette, 58th Training Squadron loadmaster trainee. “It gives the community the sense of these senior NCOs are out here trying to make the smallest bit of difference in Airmen’s lives.”
Not only did the council comb the Exchange’s food court gifting $10 dollars to Airmen for meals but they also conversed with the Airmen about their day.
According to Senior Airman Deonaire Narada, 377th Logistics Readiness Squadron fleet management and analysis, the first sergeant is the focal point for Airmen and by doing random acts of kindness the first sergeants will be more approachable.
The Team Kirtland First Sergeants Council would like to change the misnomer that first sergeants are just disciplinarians by nature.
“Maintaining good order and discipline is part of what we are charged to do but we are also charged to raise moral and welfare of our Airmen,” said Burton. “This is a part of how we do that by giving back to them and not just seeing them when they are in our office because they are in trouble or something significant has happened in their lives and we are trying to help them through it.”
