Fuel is essential to sustain U.S. military operations throughout the Middle East. To ensure fuel operations are not impeded, the Sub-Area Petroleum Office (SAPO) team is tasked with inspecting fuel sites for safety, administration, and overall site setup.

“This was our annual quality assurance visit or staff-assisted visit at key locations in Iraq, assuring site leaders...are following proper protocol for fuel farms and missions,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Nolan Johnson, petroleum inventory control noncommissioned officer with the 300th Sustainment Command.

“This was important to me because it gave me a better perspective to see what's going out there in the fuel world and not just typing fuel reports” Johnson added.

The SAPO team inspects sites in Iraq, including Al Asad Air Base, Qayyarah West Airfield, and Erbil.

“This will help me with future experiences so that I can go back home and know exactly what to look for. I can now go and teach because I now know what right looks like” said Johnson.

The team consists of Soldiers from the U.S. Army's 1st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Reserve's 300th Sustainment Command, and the U.S. Army's 590th Quartermaster Company.
