SAN DIEGO – Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet (C3F) named the fiscal year 2018 Sea and Shore Sailors of the year during a ceremony held at the U.S. 3rd Fleet headquarters building in San Diego, Feb. 14.

Information Systems Technician 1st Class Emily Guidangen from Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE, was selected as the Sea Sailor of the Year and Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Mandi Hadleyecklund from C3F was selected as Shore Sailor of the Year.

Vice Adm. John Alexander, C3F commander, noted all of the nominees come from diverse backgrounds. In every case, whether at sea or ashore, they were selected for their unwavering, superior performance and devotion to the Navy Core Values of honor, courage, and commitment.

“It’s always a great feeling to be able to share in the pride and success of Sailors,” said Alexander. “These Sailors and their families exemplify the best of our enlisted ranks which are comprised of today’s smartest, toughest and most capable young Americans from all walks of life. They represent the foundation – the keel – of the world’s greatest Navy.”

“I’m at a loss for words - I really am,” said Guidangen. “This is an exceptionally humbling experience and I wouldn’t have been able to get here without my chain of command and my amazing Sailors and Marines that I work with. I’m incredibly honored.”

“I’m speechless,” said Hadleyecklund. “I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to spend the week with such high caliber amazing Sailors and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity.”.”

C3F Command Master Chief Jack Callison said he felt motivated after his interactions with the Sailors and said he appreciates all they have done and all they will do in the future.

“These Sailors represent far more than the well-deserved title of ‘Sailor of the Year’,” said Callison. “The Sailors are the embodiment of the best-of-the-best from the deckplates.”

The other nominees for sea Sailor of the year were: Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Erwin Robillos from Commander, Carrier Strike Group ONE; Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Jesse Morris from Commander, Carrier Strike Group THREE; Yeoman 1st Class Jajuan McCoy from Commander, Carrier Strike Group SEVEN; Fire Controlman Chase LeMaster from Commander, Carrier Strike Group NINE; Information Systems Technician 1st Class Joshua Luck from Commander, Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN; and Operations Specialist Stephanie Hardy from Commander, Carrier Strike Group FIFTEEN.

The other nominee for shore Sailor of the year was Logistics Specialist 1st Class Robert Olayvar from Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific.

Guidangen and Hadleyecklund will advance to compete for the title of Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet Sailor of the year in March. The Pacific Fleet Sea SOY will be meritoriously advanced to the rank of chief petty officer during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this summer; the Pacific Fleet Shore SOY will advance to compete at the Chief of Naval Operations level. The winner of that competition will also be meritoriously advanced to the rank of chief petty officer.
