WIESBADEN, Germany – More than 40 companies displayed some of their latest and emerging technology to military leaders at the Wiesbaden Tech Expo, Feb. 14, 2019, at the Tony Bass Fitness Center in Wiesbaden.

The expo was hosted by the U.S. Army Europe G6 and brought together current and potential military customers with representatives from companies providing a wide range of commercial technology.

U.S. Army Col. Charles “Dean” Smith, 2d Theater Signal Brigade deputy brigade commander, said the expo is useful to help identify new and emerging technology to keep his unit on the cutting edge.

“It’s great to see the vendors, and looking at some of the newer technology that we can integrate into our current capabilities as we look to expand our operations across Europe,” Smith said.

The procurement and fielding process can often take years, meaning “new” communications equipment can actually already be old technology by the time it reaches Soldiers. Purchasing commercial off-the-shelf equipment is one way for units to fill capabilities gaps with available technology in order to meet mission requirements.

Thais Rochard, event manager for National Conference Services Inc., said the value of the Tech Expo is in bringing together military and industry representatives to learn from each other.

“By bringing the tech expo directly on base it gives them an opportunity to come and see what these companies have to offer and have direct conversations with them about whatever products they already have and what’s up and coming, and for the different companies to learn about the mission requirements on base,” Rochard said.

The next Wiesbaden Tech Expo is scheduled for July.
