Lt. Gen. Eric J. Wesley brought the future to the 1st Infantry Division on Feb. 7, 2019.

The director of the Army Futures Command’s Futures and Concepts Center was at Fort Riley to discuss how the force must adapt multi-domain operations to meet its current missions and face new threats.

The Army Capabilities Integration Center was transitioned to the Army Futures Command and redesignated as the Futures and Concepts Center in a December 2018 ceremony at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The move was part of the Army's modernization effort, according to information from the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, and ended the ARCIC’s 15-year history.

Having Wesley at Fort Riley to talk about multi-domain operations and the role of the Futures Command was a treat, said Maj. Gen. John S. Kolasheski, 1st Inf. Div. and Fort Riley commanding general.

The new command “is going to change the way we go after modernization and acquisition of capabilities that some of you will see here in the next couple of years,” Kolasheski said to a group of leaders from the battalion to division level.

Much of what Wesley discussed was tailored toward current leaders, but he encouraged them to think about how the Army has made conceptual changes since the late 1970s that have had a sweeping effect.

“We about ready to change the world again and that’s what I want to talk to you about today,” he said of multi-domain operations, a concept unveiled in December 2018.

Concepts mean nothing to the operational force and day-to-day work, Wesley said, because “you’ve got a lot on your plate" and there’s always something going on. Tasks such as requirements for readiness “have you consumed,” he said to the crowd of leaders.

During his visit, Wesley also met with officials across Fort Riley and participated in a roundtable discussion at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.

Wesley has served with the “Big Red One” throughout his career. He commanded a tank company in the early 1990s, a tank battalion in the early 2000s followed by a year as the division’s operations officer. He led the 1st Brigade Combat Team starting in 2008 and most recently served as the deputy commanding general for support, taking on the role as acting senior mission commander at Fort Riley when the division deployed.

He received his third star and assumed the responsibilities of the United States Army Capabilities Integration Center’s director in April 2018.
