FALLS CHURCH, Va. (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) announced Navy Medicine's fiscal year 2018 active and reserve duty Sailors of the Year (SOY) during a ceremony held here Feb. 8.
BUMED's board of senior enlisted leaders selected Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Karla Quintero, Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five, as Navy Medicine's 2018 SOY, and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Amy Bohrer, Operational Health Support Unit Bremerton, as Navy Medicine’s 2018 reserve SOY.
“I had the privilege and honor to meet and speak with each of you and you all are an impressive group… - that is why I am so proud of you.” said Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general and chief, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. “We have an incredible and remarkable family in Navy Medicine and you are all winners. We are here today to recognize the best of the best.”
Force Master Chief Hosea Smith, director of the Hospital Corps, expressed his appreciation for the Sailors and nominees across the Navy Medicine enterprise.
“It has been a very long and tough week and we are here to recognize the 2018 Navy Medicine of the Year,” said Smith. “The Sailors of the year worked incredible hard to get where they are today, and it has been a privilege to get to know each and every one of them.”
The remaining active duty nominees included Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Sean Cather, assigned to BUMED; Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Daniel Guillen, assigned to Navy Medicine Training Support Center and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Beatriz Solorio, from Naval Health Clinic Hawaii.
The reserve nominees included Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Toninette Turner, from Operational Health Support Unit Jacksonville; Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Stephen Robertson, assigned to Navy Medicine Education and Training Command and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Anthony Juarez, from Expeditionary Medical Facility Camp Pendleton.
Each nominee will be awarded a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal signed by Faison for their participation.
Quintero will now move on to represent Navy Medicine in the Navy-wide 2018 Shore Sailor of the Year competition and Bohrer will represent Navy Medicine in the Commander, Navy Reserve Force Sailor of the Year competition later this year.
“It has been an honor to be considered the best that Navy Medicine has to offer,” said Quintero. “Everyone here deserves this title because they are all phenomenal Sailors and worked just as hard as I did to get to where I am today. I may have won, but we all deserve it.”
The Navy's Hospital Corps consists of more than 30,000 active duty and reserve hospital corpsmen that deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, in both wartime and peacetime. The rating is the largest, most professionally diverse and highly decorated enlisted corps in the Navy.
Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provide health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans, in high operational tempo environments, at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.
