MILLINGTON, TN – Naval Support Activity Mid-South partnered with local law enforcement, first responders and emergency services to conduct an active shooter exercise on February 6 as part of a nation-wide Navy event.
The installation conducted the exercise in conjunction with U.S. Fleet Forces Command and Navy Installations Command for an annual exercise called Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2019 running from February 4 through 15.
The anti-terrorism exercise is conducted every year at all Navy installations. The exercise is intended to enhance the readiness of Navy security forces and operations. The exercise is not in response to any specific threat, but instead allows Navy security forces to “train like they fight” in realistic scenarios. The exercise took place on board the installation in the Navy Exchange furniture store.
"We have to train like we fight. It's important for our security forces to have this opportunity to run through the drills and exercise their skills in a realistic scenario," said Capt. Michael Wathen, commanding officer, NSA Mid-South. "I recognize that the exercise can cause delays for folks throughout the two weeks, but these exercises are vital to our ability to defend our installation."
This year, the installation teamed up with local agencies to further enhance readiness and interoperability.
Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, the Memphis Field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Shelby County Sherriff Office (SCSO), SCSO S.W.A.T. Team and Bomb Squad, Shelby County Fire Department, and Millington Fire and Police Departments worked alongside Navy security forces and Navy Criminal Investigative Service during the event.
“It was impressive to see so many organizations working together at this event. We learned from each other and have greater confidence in our ability to respond to events as a team,” said Cmdr. Michael Mosi, executive officer, NSA Mid-South. “In addition to the Navy security forces getting to team up with the local agencies, this event provided a unique opportunity for local organizations to work with each other. Our entire community is stronger for because of this exercise.”
The exercise included exercising response to and neutralization of an active shooter, identification and disarmament of a bomb, and medical assessment and transport of injured personnel.
The exercises continue next week with Navy-wide changes to force protection condition levels as the Navy exercises it’s “solid curtain” responses.
