Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific (EWTGPAC) held a change of command ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado Feb. 1.

Capt. Jack L. Killman relieved Capt. Carl E. Meuser. Commander, Carrier Strike Group 15, Rear Adm. Bill Byrne, was the guest speaker. Speaking of his new position, Capt. Killman stated, “I’m extremely excited about continuing to advocate for our amphibious forces and the awesome capability that can be delivered. These are very exciting times as we continue to evolve distributed operations to include operating in degraded environments while delivering maximum lethality, and exploring new doctrine such as Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations.”

During the ceremony, Meuser was awarded the Legion of Merit. Meuser retired after 30 years of dedicated service. During his remarks, he expressed his appreciation for a career that took him around the globe.

“Thirty-three years ago when I boarded the bus in Wichita and began my journey to boot camp, I expected adventure of some form or other. What I did not expect to find was the soul-filling comradery of a ship, of talking about life with the starboard lookout out on the bridge wing on a cold, cold night off the coast of Korea, or even the shared experience of not being able to take a shower because the evaporators were not working and the ship was down to five percent fresh water halfway between San Diego and Pearl Harbor. I was not expecting purpose and meaning,” he said.

Killman served as executive officer on the guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61) and commanding officer of the guided-missile frigate USS Elrod (FFG 55). Other previous tours include reactor officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) and deputy commodore of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 4.

EWTGPAC trains, educates, and advocates doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures of Naval Amphibious Warfare to Joint, and Combined forces in order to enhance operational commanders’ ability to effect operations from the sea.
