Airmen from the 820th Base Defense Group participated in Comprehensive Airman Fitness Day Jan. 25, 2019, here.
The 820th BDG designed the CAF Day to help Airmen become more physically resilient and better understand the full mission of the Base Defense Group as it transforms for future conflicts.
“I felt it was important that we put together a full mission profile to highlight our capabilities to ourselves while adding a physical component to reinforce all CAF Day tiers. In doing so we shared information on the future role of the 5th generation BDG,” said Col. Benito Barron, 820th BDG commander.
The day began with a tactical air insertion and a ground formation to motivate new Airmen to receive their own jump qualifications. After a three-mile tactical overland movement, the group received briefings on physical fitness and nutrition.
Barron recognizes that preparing Airmen to be resilient in a combat situation takes more than one day and more than one focus. It will require training and a sense of community within the squadrons. The 820th BDG’s next CAF Day is already in the planning stages.
“The level of motivation and sense of camaraderie I witnessed leads me to believe this was a success. Future CAF Days will incorporate scenario based planning to rehearse our capabilities which will require us to operate in austere environments,” said Barron. “By doing so, we can communicate to our Airmen the importance of the CAF Day tiers as we continue to grow resiliency.”
