SAN DIEGO – Navy Medicine West (NMW) named Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (HM1) Amy Bohrer, from Operational Health Support Unit (OHSU) Bremerton, the regional 2018 Reserve Senior Sailor of the Year during a ceremony, Jan. 24.

The announcement came during NMW’s annual board of governor’s meeting, a gathering of all the region’s commanding officers and command master chiefs.

“We selected an outstanding Sailor to represent the enlisted personnel of Navy Medicine West,” said Command Master Chief Loren Rucker. “The caliber of Sailors we have in the Navy now rivals that of any generation and I’m incredibly proud to serve with them. The 15 Sailors that represented their commands in both the active and reserve force are all top notch and should be proud of their accomplishments.”

Bohrer, a U.S. Navy Reservist who hails from Aurora, Colorado, is OHSU Bremerton Detachment O’s unit leading petty officer (LPO) and directly responsible for leading and mentoring 32 enlisted Sailors, to include managing five work center supervisors, the clinic LPO, and the unit’s career counselor.

“I can’t say thank you enough to the leaders throughout my career who saw a lot more in me than I could ever see in myself,” Bohrer said. “I didn’t get here on my own—I got here by having strong leaders in my life and some incredible Sailors to work with.”

Mentorship, adds Bohrer, has been pivotal in her career and something she plans to pay forward with the junior Sailors she leads. She encourages them to find those attributes they admire most in their leaders and emulate them to become the type of leaders they want to be.

“HM1 Bohrer is an exceptional Sailor who continuously seeks to improve OHSU Bremerton's state of readiness to ensure mission success,” said Capt. Frank Brajevic, OHSU Bremerton’s commanding officer. “She is a superstar at both the detachment and headquarters levels and sets the example that others should follow if they wish to be successful. We are honored and proud of her selection as the NMW Reserve Sailor of the Year.”

In recognition of her leadership skills, Bohrer was appointed to take charge of OHSU Bremerton’s Sailors at an inaugural joint service field exercise, Med Ranier II, held at Joint Base Lewis McChord last summer. During this two-week evolution, Bohrer and her Sailors honed their tactical combat casualty care skills while also conducting rapid emergency medical support and evacuation during a simulated combat environment.

“HM1 Bohrer is a reflection of our first class petty officers across OHSU Bremerton who exceed all expectations and exemplify our Navy core values,” said Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman, Brad Jewett. “I am extremely proud of her and her significant accomplishments.”

The Sailor of the Year program was established in 1972 by Former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize an individual Sailor who best represents the group of dedicated professional Sailors at each command and, ultimately, in the Navy.

Navy Medicine West leads (NMW) Navy Medicine’s Western Pacific health care system and global research and development enterprise. Throughout the region, NMW provides medical care to nearly 700,000 beneficiaries across 10 naval hospitals, two dental battalions, and 51 branch clinics located throughout the West Coast of the U.S., Asia, and the Pacific. Globally, NMW also has oversight of eight research laboratories across the U.S. and overseas that deliver high-value, high-impact research products to support and protect the health and readiness of service members.
