Submitted story by Emma Hummer, Intern at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and edited by Max Lonzanida, Public Affairs Officer at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

On a warm Friday afternoon, crewmembers from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) crossed the gangway to board the ageless battleship USS Wisconsin (BB 64) for a re-enlistment ceremony for one of their own. The Wisconsin is docked next to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and on any given week, hosts a plethora of military ceremonies. This warm, yet frigid afternoon was no exception; and the iconic backdrop of turret #1 was the backdrop for a re-enlistment for OS3(SW/AW) Jenny Porter

Porter has been in the Navy for two years, and was coming up on the end of her first enlistment. She chose to reenlist, not just in the hangar bay aboard the Eisenhower, or in a career counselor’s office, but on the ageless deck of the Wisconsin. “I want to stay in [the Navy] for another six years if possible and make the best of it while I can” Porter said when asked why she chose to reenlist.

Porter, originally from Cocoa Beach, Florida, decided to join the Navy in the because of her family. She shared that, “I have family in the service and they inspired me to join the Navy. My family are all so happy and honored that their daughter is serving in the Navy”. She goes on to add, “I love it [the Navy] and enjoy the people and the job in general, it is all so honorable.”
