Finding solutions to become more informed about education and financial readiness is a common goal for a new year and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) helps provide assistance to all ranks of active duty service members, retirees, widows and eligible family members.
The NMCRS was founded in 1904, aiding widows and orphans of fallen active duty service members in the era before the start of the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) policy. Marines, sailors and volunteers with the NMCRS celebrated their 115th birthday on Jan. 23.
“We assist with financial education and assistance as an interest free loan or grant,” said Elizabeth S. Wyman, the chair of volunteers of NMCRS on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The NMCRS offers many programs including budget counseling, casework financial assistance, visiting nurse program and ‘Budget for Baby’ workshops.
“We provide our active duty service members and their eligible family members with free services that are confidential,” said Wyman. “NMCRS has continued to evolve to the needs of our clients.”
Wyman said the organization continues to operate as a volunteer-focused organization to ensure that the donations they receive are maximized to give back to the programs that aid their clients.
“The NMCRS’s birthday commemorates the founding of our organization and reminds us of our relevancy to aid our clients in their hour of need,” Wyman said.
Clients can contact the NMCRS’s Camp Lejeune office at (910) 451-5346 or New River office at (910) 449-6431 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Can also search on WWW.NMCRS.ORG for a local office.
