“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today, Jan. 21, 2019, a Federal holiday celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The national theme of the day is, “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off” to encourage individuals to dedicate the day to community service. On this day we remember Dr. King’s remarkable life and reminded to follow his principles of unity and equality.
Given the history- the Army is committed to the ideals endorsed by Dr. King. By living the Army values we are committed to treating every individual with dignity and respect as we are all brothers and sisters in arms.
The U.S. Army is influenced by Dr. King in many different aspects- its dedication to leveraging the strength of its diverse force and providing equality for all civilians and service members is steadily on the rise. All Soldiers, Army Civilians and Families are valued members of the Army team; without a doubt, we are thankful for their contributions as they play a vital role to the personal and professional success of our Army.
Army leaders from the lowest to highest ranks have helped shape personnel policies, implement training and identify individual’s willing to carry out additional duties, i.e. Equal Opportunity, Equal Employment Opportunity, Master Resiliency and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program, etc., that will ensure every individual has the opportunity to use their skills and talents and be provided with resources to support them along the way.
Soldiers, Civilians, and Families from the past and present have built a great legacy to represent part of what the U.S. Army stands for; they have built a legacy of honor, professionalism, integrity, selfless service, leadership, personal courage, loyalty, and respect. This legacy has been built over the years and serves as a foundation for many generations to come and it is our responsibility to live the Army Values and continue to promoting a positive environment for “ALL”.
“This day of national community service promotes diversity, fosters inclusive behavior and demonstrates respect for others. When the nation celebrates Dr. King’s dream, it celebrates the American Dream”… “Dr. King's life and teachings helped to shape the history of the U.S. and the culture of the nation. He dedicated his life to a dream of equality and challenged the nation to recognize that individuals should not be judged by the color of their skin. The Army strongly embraces diversity as a way to create a system that maximizes individual talents, increases morale and greatly enhances organizational effectiveness. Dr. King's leadership rallied people from all walks of life and awoke a nation to the need for equality, tolerance and justice. The Army recognizes the timeless values of courage, truth, dignity, humility and service Dr. King taught through his actions as words.” – Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs)
The Soldiers and Leadership of Task Force Cavalier will to continue to live the Army Values in a positive environment that promotes unity, service and equality. “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off”
