U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden took a day to “Remember! Celebrate! Act!” during a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 16 at Clay Kaserne.

Pastor Elisha Lawson, from Jesus World Outreach Center Ministries, spoke about King’s message of love and his enduring legacy. He encouraged attendees at the event to focus on the impact King’s actions have had in the time since his death.

“We normally focus on his achievements; his accomplishments,” he said of King. “But the most important thing we need to focus on is what moved the movement.”

King placed his spiritual values at the very core of his struggle to change the nation, Lawson said.

He highlighted the importance of King’s life as a pastor and how that shaped his fight against injustice and inequality.

“He was a great leader to the fact that those who came under him and followed him, he imparted the dream into their hearts,” he said.

King was making a big change, and he was doing it without violence, Lawson said. He used faith, hope and love as his weapons—ones that cannot be defeated, he said.

Eighth grade students from Wiesbaden Middle School closed the remembrance by reading King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
