CSA-63 Sailor Selected for Warrant Officer-1

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, MD, UNITED STATES

    01.16.2019

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Jahmai Stokes

    Cryptologic Warfare Group SIX

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. – A Sailor assigned to Cyber Strike Activity SIXTY THREE (CSA-63) was selected as one of the Navy’s first warrant officers (W-1) since the rank was discontinued in 1975.

On Dec. 7, the Navy announced through NAVADMIN 293/18 the selection of Cryptologic Technician (Networks) (CTN) 1st Class Devan Sorenson, as one of six petty officers chosen to don the new rank since its disestablishment.

“I am extremely honored to have been selected,” said Sorenson. “I am enthusiastic not only for my future, but the future of the cyber warfare community as a whole. I hope to lead the Navy to be the best cyber fighting force in the country.”

According to Sorenson, a native from Bozeman, Mont., he never thought that his bold decision to enlist in the Navy nine years ago would lead him to where he is now.

“I have many people to thank because I did not get to where I am alone,” said Sorenson. “I have the world’s best support system at home, my wife Tiffany, who has helped me keep everything together. I’ve also been very fortunate to lead some of the best Sailors in the Navy, who helped me shine as a leader.”

One of the people who was happy to hear of Sorenson’s selection was his former commanding officer Cmdr. Deb Yusko, whose change of command ceremony was happening when she heard the news.

“I am very proud of him,” said Cmdr. Yusko. “He is innovative, talented, and has a clear vision for the future.”

The Navy reinstated the W-1 rank through the Cyber Warrant Officer In-Service Procurement Selection Board in order to retain cyber-talent and fill leadership roles. The Navy began accepting applications in June 2018 from CTNs in the paygrades of E-5 and E-6 who met specific Naval Enlisted Classification and time-in-service requirements.

CSA-63’s primary mission is to provide and deploy trained cryptologic warfare officers and enlisted personnel, expertise, and equipment to support offensive and defense cyberspace operations in support of U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) and Cyber National Mission Forces (CNMF) Defend the Nation (DTN) missions.
