GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Phoenix West Recruiting Company welcomed new company commander Capt. Edward Donoghue, following a change of command ceremony at Glendale City Council Chamber, Jan. 14.
Donoghue replaced outgoing commander Capt. Eugene Lee, who had been in command of Phoenix West since Jan. 2017.
Overseeing the ceremony was Lt. Col. Scott Morley, commander, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, who praised the company and its achievements during Lee’s tenure in command.
“The Phoenix Recruiting Battalion is an organization which prides itself on its outstanding leadership and you will not find greater examples than the two captains standing before you today,” Morley said. “Eugene, There isn’t a Soldier in our formation who hasn’t been positively affected by your hard work in ensuring they were provided for in any range of capacities while you served as company commander.”
“You have been at the heart of it all, making sure our recruiters had what they needed to be successful and achieve the mission … you led from the front,” Morley continued.
Morley said Lee surpassed all organizational benchmarks in 2018, to include enlistments, retention and community partnerships.
“This fine organization standing in front of you planned and organized the inaugural and second annual Glendale Induction Ceremony,” he said. “In sum Phoenix West enlisted 1223 recruits during Captain Lee’s tenure. Let that sink in for a moment. That is the equivalent of a Brigade Combat Team, solely because of the hard work and dedication of the men and women standing before you.”
“You have set a standard for all others to follow and we are all gracious for everything you’ve done and will continue to do when you take your position at battalion headquarters,” Morley said.
During his speech Lee said although recruiting is difficult, his company first sergeants helped him strive for excellence and maintain a high standard.
“You are phenomenal and intelligent leaders who know how to win. You made my job truly easy. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking this organization to new heights and I value your mentorship and friendship,” Lee said. “Thanks to you and our recruiters, we exceeded every recruiting benchmark in Fiscal Year 2018.”

We did this because you were all in – and this year we’re on track to break even more milestones,” he said.
Donoghue thanked Morley and Lee for their help in preparing him for his new role.
“Thank you for your guidance and mentorship as I take command of Phoenix West,” he said. “I’m excited to join this outstanding formation and I look forward to all the great opportunities in my path.”
