U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division is revolutionizing the way it does business, through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 process, to better share information and lessons learned to move dirt more effectively.

The ISO 9001 processes address various aspects of quality management and provide guidance and tools for organizations to ensure their products and services consistently meet customer’s requirements. The certification is one of the most comprehensive quality standards accepted globally and shows a commitment to striving for excellence.

“This certification enhances our ability to share work across the region among all seven districts using set standards,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Toy, USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division Commander. “Regional sharing of work maintains the Corps of Engineers technical competencies so when called on to perform any function as the premier engineering organization for the world, we can deliver.”

The base principles of the certification directly align with the core competencies the Army Corps of Engineers’ focuses on to deliver engineering solutions for the nation’s toughest challenges while improving the way they do business.

“Our team sought this certification to be more efficient as a region and to improve overall customer satisfaction,” said Gregory Pace, USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division Organization Performance Improvement Specialist. “Putting your customers first, making sure you consistently meet their needs and enhancing their satisfaction can lead to repeat customers, new clients and increased business for your organization.”

The program required all seven districts: Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, Huntington, Louisville, Nashville, and Pittsburgh to be in rigid compliance with set ISO standards in areas such as customer satisfaction, contract administration, management commitment and responsibility, quality systems, purchasing, and data and document control.

“We are the first division in USACE to achieve this certification and are leading the way in implementing the certification’s principles in projects we are currently working,” said Pace.

The Veterans Administration Canandaigua Medical Facility, a $142 million phase-one project, is the latest example of our Buffalo and Louisville Districts using regional work sharing to build and improve processes on a world-class facility for our nation’s veterans.

“As Americas’ Engineers there is no challenge we can’t overcome because our strength lies in our talented and dedicated people,” said Toy. “This is not just another certification; it allows our incredible workforce to deliver projects, support our partners’ missions, lead change within the organization and revolutionize the Corps of Engineers.”
