Research says that two weeks after an event, a person will remember just 10 percent of what he reads, 20 percent of what he hears and 30 percent of what he sees. In contrast, that same person will remember 50 percent of what he sees and hears, 70 percent of what he says, and 90 percent of what he says and does.
These numbers may be some of the catalysts for the Army’s Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence’s newest program of instruction, otherwise known as the Basic Leader Course, and Soldiers at the Fort Bliss NCO Academy are experiencing the evolved approach firsthand.
“Lessons are facilitated in small groups with a collaborative approach,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jeffery DeLay, the Fort Bliss NCOA BLC chief of training, “which allows Soldiers to discover information and then apply it to new and ambiguous situations. The Experiential Learning Model methodology shifts the teaching paradigm from ‘what to think’ to ‘how to think’ and places the learning responsibility on the student through group participation and interaction.”
