The award of serving as an Army recruiter is in the journey.
Army Recruiting Command Soldiers traveled to San Antonio, Texas, for U.S. Army All-American Bowl week, Jan. 1-7.
Along with the pageantry that went into the U.S. Army All-American Bowl high school all-star football game, Brig. Gen. Kevin Vereen recognized several NCOs for their duty performance in supporting the selection tour used to identify and recognize the football players and band members.
These noncommissioned officers included 2nd Recruiting Brigade’s Sgt. 1st Class Jimmie Lawson. The native of Roselle, New Jersey, participated in his second stint as a Soldier mentor and selection tour NCO for the All-American Bowl. This year that meant traveling 7,843 miles and presenting jerseys to 28 football players, and band jackets to 22 band members. He presented at 36 locations across the eastern United States, with tour stops from as far north as New Jersey to as far south as Florida.
Lawson provided “invaluable guidance, mentorship and execution expertise in this critical mission,” according to the award citation. This was underscored during his community service visit at the Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio and with his positive interactions throughout the week.
“It has meant a lot to participate in the All-American selections of these young men and women,” Lawson said. “It was the most meaningful and rewarding mission I was able to accomplish in my 25 years of military service.”
Lawson is scheduled to retire July 31.
“I am going to miss the relationships I have had with Soldiers, leaders, government civilians and the young people I have met over my career,” he said.
