Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Ohio hosted their annual District Training Meeting (DTM) and Awards Ceremony at the Kalahari Convention Center in Sandusky, Ohio Dec. 13 and 14, 2018.

The multi-day event started out with required training covering numerous topics including suicide awareness and prevention, antiterrorism force protection, sexual assault/harassment awareness and prevention, and leadership.

“It’s great that we’ve been given the opportunity to extend this event by one day,” said Cmdr. Benjamin Martin, NRD Ohio commanding officer. “Last year, we jammed a lot of training in about three hours. This year we were able to focus on the topics we needed to cover. This event is about taking care of ourselves, taking care of our Shipmates and having the tools to do so.”

Upon completion of training, NRD Ohio had the opportunity to frock four of the Navy’s newest petty officers to the next paygrade. The frockees included Intelligence Specialist 1st Class Eugene Cabral, Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) 1st Class Kaitlyn Conrad, Quartermaster 1st Class Nathan Wylie and Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Stacey Hadden.

The event then transitioned to the annual awards ceremony with a “City Lights” theme. Lt. Eric Kettani and Chief Navy Counselor Eric Kehl hosted the event where Martin and other NRD Ohio senior leaders presented nearly 80 awards to NRD Ohio’s best and brightest.

“Recruiting duty is one of the best duties any Sailor can do for themselves and the Navy,” said Kehl. “And NRD Ohio is the best in the nation. Our headquarters staff wants to know what they can do every day to help remove any burden we have to keep us focused on mission. My team and I know as long as we focus on finding the best men and women to man the fleet our support team and chain of command will take care of us.”

This year’s awards ceremony celebrated significant individual and team achievements during fiscal year 2018. NRD Ohio ended the year with outstanding production numbers, surpassing previous years and solidifying its reputation as one of the premier Recruiting Districts in all of Navy Recruiting Command.

“This is a fantastic team,” said Martin. “We know the importance of our mission to man the fleet. We put our elbows together and look out for one another.”

The top awards of the night went to Lt. Samuel Hogue, Officer Recruiter of the Year (Active) and Division Officer of the Year; Lt. Manuel Cooper, Officer Recruiter of the Year (Reserve); Damage Controlman 1st Class Charles Pace, Enlisted Recruiter of the Year (Active); Navy Counselor 1st Class Trisha Hoskins, Enlisted Recruiter of the Year (Reserve); Chief Navy Counselor Cory King, Division Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Year; Navy Counselor 1st Class Christopher Harkins, Leading Petty Officer of the Year; Lawrence Wellington, Civilian of the Year; Knockout Kings, Division of the Year; Lexington, Large Station of the Year; Elizabethtown, Medium Station of the Year; Kent, Small Station of the Year; Navy Counselor 1st Class Joseph Pace, Sailor of the Year; and Personnel Specialist 2nd Class John Vonhandorf, Junior Sailor of the Year.
