Navy-wide, individual ranks have come together to form command organizations among themselves. The First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) is one of many organizations aboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

One purpose of FCPOA is to promote organizational relationships and close cooperation among all FCPOA members, and to provide for the welfare of the FCPOA community, said Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Kyle Arnold, FCPOA’s president.

FCPOA has worked with Ford’s Family Readiness Group, other command organizations and has even become active in the local community through volunteer work and community events.

“Being a part of FCPOA is a good way to display your leadership skills,” said Arnold. “It is a good way to contribute to Ford’s team and give back to the Navy.”

A good example of demonstrating leadership in FCPOA is reflected on the mentoring of junior Sailors.

“Being a part of the FCPOA is a great resource,” said Aviation Support Equipment Technician 1st Class Jason Chavez, a member of Ford’s FCPOA. “I get to tap into a wealth of knowledge and experience on how to better lead and develop Sailors.”

FCPOA meets with board members from other command organizations such as the Second Class Petty Officer Association (SCPOA) and Junior Enlisted Association (JEA) to mentor junior Sailors on leadership in a group setting where different rates can come together and work towards a common goal: the well-being of their members.

“The FCPOA feels that if we can take case of the basic needs of our junior Sailors, they will be able to perform their responsibilities on the ship with greater ability,” said Arnold. “We will continue to hold our junior Sailors to higher standards, higher levels of performance and excellence.”

Aboard Ford, membership is open to all first class petty officer personnel. New personnel or newly advanced first class petty officers are given automatic membership for the first month. Dues are $5 per month or $50 for the year and will go towards funding events throughout the ship, hail and farewell gifts, retirement gifts, etc.
