MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – In front of an audience of several hundred attendees and ceremony participants representing the six installations in his new command, Brig. Gen. Benjamin Watson officially assumed command of Marine Corps Installations East – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune during a ceremony held at Goettge Memorial Field House on MCB Camp Lejeune, Dec. 14, 2018. Col. Scott Baldwin, acting commander, MCIEAST, relinquished the command he has held since October, effectively returning to his original duties as deputy commander.
Maj. Gen. Coglianese, commanding general, Marine Corps Installations Command, who served as guest speaker at the Assumption of Command lauded Brig. Gen. Watson’s credentials.
“On behalf of the commandant and MCIEAST and all the Marines you’re going to serve here, welcome aboard,” he said. “You’re the right guy, you’re a warrior and I’m really just proud to be here to welcome you (here).”
Watson, a career infantry officer with 27 years of experience, was previously the commander for Task Force Southwest in Afghanistan where he was replaced by Brig. Gen. Julian D. Alford this past November.
Watson said he’s looking forward to his new position which supports an estimated population of 270,000 Marines, Sailors, civilian employees, families, veterans and retirees across six Marine Corps installations along the East Coast.
“People are always a precious resource and we have a lot of exceptional people among us at MCIEAST and the base here,” said Watson. “I look forward to getting to know you, I look forward to working with you and I promise you that I will work hard. I promise you that I will listen and I promise you that I will learn from you and I can’t wait to get started.”
