NORFOLK, Va. - Naval Station Norfolk's Emergency Management Department held a destructive weather and emergency preparedness presentation, Feb. 19, to better prepare commands and personnel on what to do during a disaster.

The presentation covered topics including destructive weather preparation, workplace emergency plans, evacuations and installation warning and notification system.

According to Gene Lambert, Naval Station Norfolk's Emergency Management officer, the most important things in disaster preparedness are being informed and making a kit.

"The idea of this training is disaster preparedness," said Lambert. "We want people to take the information back to their commands and develop plans for a potential disaster."

Having plans for potential emergencies is especially important for commands that are doing critical missions, such as ships, squadrons and other high-intensity commands. In addition to having a plan to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, these commands may need to have an alternative working site arranged and have tools and necessary documents ready to go.

Lambert stressed that during and after a disaster or potential evacuation, all Navy personnel are required to report back to their command their status and whereabouts.

The brief didn't just cover Navy and Department of Defense disaster preparedness. Lambert advised everyone to spread the word about being prepared at home.

"I hope this will get them to develop a family plan," said Lambert. "They need to make copies of important documents, figure out where they would go and prepare a kit."

The kits that Lambert refers to are easy to make and store and should contain some of the following items: water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlight, batteries, a battery-operated radio and any necessary prescription medications. The kit should include enough for everyone in your family to survive for three to five days.

If your family has pets, some extra planning may be necessary. Hurricane shelters and many hotels do not accept pets and kennels will require that you have an up-to-date shot record.

In the coming months, Naval Station Norfolk, as well as other bases in the area, will hold disaster preparedness exercises such as Hurricane Exercise 2009 Citadel Gale, an exercise designed to test a bases ability to prepare for and react to an incoming hurricane. Hurricane Exercise 2009 Citadel Gale is scheduled for May 4-17. Additionally, a state-wide tornado exercise is scheduled for March 17.
