MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Last September, Hurricane Florence made landfall on the East Coast causing widespread destruction in North Carolina, including many areas on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Although MCB Camp Lejeune is still conducting recovery efforts, Onslow Beach will be reopened for recreational use on Dec. 14.
“The beach will have limited access right now,” said Mili Taliferro, director of lodging, MCB Camp Lejeune. “Onslow beach will be open from the EB training area to the Starfish Point Pavilion and Marine Corps Community Services anticipates that the recreational areas, pavilions, Marine Mart and RV Park will be reopened as well.”
Florence not only knocked out power, but the storm surges breached the sand dunes and destroyed and degraded much of the infrastructure on Onslow Beach. It also left a large amount of hazardous debris in its wake, making it dangerous to walk on the shore or conduct ocean-based activities.
“The lodges at the beach will be available for rent but, the cabanas sustained a lot of damage from the storm and will not be open” said Taliferro. “We are diligently working on beautifying Onslow Beach again.”
According to Taliferro, the multiple structures that were damaged in the storm are to be repaired next year.
Safety has been the biggest concern with the reopening of the beach due to the amount of hazardous debris on the shore.
“Prior to opening the beach we have looked at every aspect in ensuring patron safety,” said Taliferro. “We ask that all patrons please observe and follow all posted signs and do not attempt to enter areas that are restricted.”
Due to safety concerns at this time, recreational vehicles will not be permitted on the beach.
