NEWPORT, R.I. — The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Engineering are co-hosting a FIRST Lego League Qualifier in the Science and Engineering Building on campus on Saturday, Dec. 8. The competition begins at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m.
Twenty-four teams from southeastern Massachusetts will be competing with robots they began building at the start of the academic year. Teams will demonstrate their ability to work together and show off projects designed to highlight this year's mission: “Into Orbit — focusing on space and quality of life for astronauts.”
The event is supported by FIRST Robotics Competition Team 5846, which is made up of students from six local high schools.
NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Washington.
