MAGDEBURG, Germany -- As part of U.S. Army Europe's on going efforts on strengthen host nation relationships, the commanding general recently visited the German State of Sachsen-Anhalt at the invitation of Minister President Rainer Haseloff.

The state has particular significance to U.S. Army Europe as a key transit
route for rotational U.S. Army convoys moving from North Sea ports to Poland and the Baltic States. Bundeswehr Kaserne has served as a Convoy Support Center for previous Atlantic Resolve rotations and will do so again in January and February.

"That you are making use of Autobahn 2 as a main supply route is not a
surprise to me,” said Rainer to Lt. Gen. Christopher Cavoli. "This is the
1,000-year old, historic Reichstrasse, linking Rotterdam with the Baltic
States. You and your U.S. Army convoys are most welcome to transit Sachsen-Anhalt."

Cavoli said it was "an honor to be in Magdeburg, the birthplace of von
Steuben, an officer instrumental in the early success of the US Army and our nation's independence."

During his visit, Cavoli committed to keeping the Bundeswehr's Landeskommando, the state government and the U.S. Consulate Leipzig informed of planned convoy movements. He also said he wanted to ensure that the U.S. Army Soldiers that pass through are not a "mystery" to the people. To that end, Cavoli promised U.S. Army Europe participation in the Sachsen-Anhalt State Fair in Quindlinburg at the end of May.
