    KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The project team responsible for the design, construction and quality control of new hangar / maintenance facilities for the recently fielded KC-46A Pegasus air tanker won top honors from AFCEC – the Air Force Civil Engineering Center. The team, including Ben Davis, the Kansas City District project manager, was recognized at a ceremony in San Antonio November 14, 2018.

    According to the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the winners of the 2018 Air Force Design Awards, recognizing eight innovative projects for excellence in design and efficiency.

    “These award-winning projects exemplify the Air Force’s commitment to partnering with industry to deliver quality, mission ready facilities,” said Col. Scott Matthews, AFCEC Facility Engineering director.

    “These designers optimized and balanced functionality, cost-efficiency, sustainability and aesthetics,” said Matthews.

    The project team won the highest achievement - the Honor Award.

    Facility Design: KC-46A Three-Bay General Maintenance Hangar, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, was awarded the 2018 Honor Award.

    "Ben Davis served us well as the point man leading the project from the Corps perspective. His engagement and energy helped the project really shine," said Bryan Smith, Acting Deputy District Engineer for Project Management and also Davis' direct supervisor as Chief of Military Construction.

    Davis emphasized the while he is the one who represented the district in receiving the award, that many dedicated professionals in the district actually pulled the project together by their excellent work and timely delivery of the needs for the project.

    The members of this winning Facility Design team included:

    - Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company Andy Mashek
    - Walsh Construction Dennis McBride
    - 22nd Engineer Squadron Lt. Col. Daniel
    Craig
    - Air Force Civil Engineering Center Tom Hodges

    Davis said the design, construction and lessons learned have been used by the Air Force and the Corps of Engineers to build similar facilities where the KC-46A will be stationed.
