SAN DIEGO —Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) engineer Stephen Cox was honored as the National Defense Industrial Association's A. Bryan Lasswell Award winner for Fleet Support during an NDIA Awards program and luncheon Oct. 18.

Cox, lead engineer at the Center’s RESTORE (Reverse Engineering; Science and Technology for Obsolescence, Repair, and Evaluation) Laboratory, was honored for his efforts in conducting an engineering analysis and high-fidelity imaging of the damage incurred by the USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) following its collision at sea with a 29-thousand ton container ship while in congested waters off Japan and for leading a first-time effort to use the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud data technology to assess actual shipboard damage.

Drawing on his extensive experience with LiDAR and knowledge of shipboard engineering, Cox would accomplish in five days what traditional damage assessment methods would have taken months to perform.

LiDAR scanners were able to capture billions of measurements in 3D format, providing damage assessors and Navy commanders answers to questions about the Fitzgerald’s hull, mast, and key structures for a miniscule cost versus months and millions of dollars using traditional methods and ultimately accelerate the restoration of the guided missile destroyer to the Fleet.
