New commander takes charge of NSF Redzikowo

SLUPSK, Poland (NNS) – Naval Support Facility (NSF) Redzikowo conducted its change of command on Nov. 27, as Capt. Jon Grant relieved Capt. Scott McClelland during a ceremony at the Slupsk Police Academy.

“The charge of command we commemorate today carries with it the same requirement to assume responsibility for what is placed in your care,” said Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, commander of Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA), who presided over the ceremony. “Captain Scott McClelland has demonstrated that responsibility. In a challenging and demanding environment, he put his nose to the grindstone and got to work. He shouldered the burden of responsibility, accountability and authority and led from the front.”

McClelland assumed command of NSF Redzikowo, the Navy’s second Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense installation, in December 2017. He was recognized by Williamson for improving the teamwork between Navy and Department of Defense agencies involved in the base’s ongoing construction efforts.

During his command tour, McClelland also maintained NSF Redzikowo’s close partnerships with the communities of Slupsk and Redzikowo through community outreach projects involving local civil and military officials, law enforcement agencies and schools.

“The presence of the Naval Support Facility and Polish Force Protection Battalion here at Redzikowo Military Base is a clear demonstration that our defense ties are strong,” McClelland said. “The team approach to our objective is a continued source of pride and honor. It has been a true pleasure working alongside you as we both met our individual and joint objectives.”

NSF Redzikowo will be Grant’s second Aegis Ashore command tour. Grant served as the commanding officer of NSF Deveselu, Romania, from November 2016 to November 2017, overseeing the continued development of Deveselu as the Navy’s first Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (AAMDS) installation in Europe.

Grant comes to NSF Redzikowo from Naval Information Forces West in San Diego, where he served as Strike Force Interoperability Officer.

“Given the complex and challenging security environment we are facing today, I want to thank you all for your superb leadership and service in promoting peace, cooperation, and for successfully ensuring the strategic stability within the region,” Grant said. “I intend to work diligently with our team and our Polish partners to ensure the continued effectiveness of this facility and its startup in support of our ballistic missile defense operations.”

NSF Redzikowo, the first U.S. Navy installation in Poland, is co-located with the Polish Force Protection Battalion. NSF Redzikowo’s operations enable the responsiveness of U.S. and allied forces in support of Navy Region EURAFSWA’s mission to provide services to the fleet, fighter, and family.

To ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia, Navy Region EURAFSWA provides operational platforms ashore which enable U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to be where and when they are needed.
