On a cool, clear central Texas evening, November 18, 2018, the town of College Station, home of Texas A&M University, celebrated their community of military veterans with a football game extravaganza, during which the Aggies faced the Blazers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“Texas A&M is a senior military college that produces a lot of officers for this nation’s military,” said Houstonian Army Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Joe E. Ramirez, Jr., Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, “so events like this allow us to present our future officers and honor our veterans. It's very special to all of us.”

The event included a pass and review of the institution’s cadets, presided over by admirals and generals from throughout the U.S. armed forces. Texas A&M University commissions an average of 240 officers yearly, with veterans from all five branches of the U.S. military hailing from the central Texas campus. Only the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel in South Carolina produce moreprivate university officers.

A&M freshman Tucker Dozier helped start the game by joining the teams on the field for the coin toss, thinking his father, Army Sgt. First Class Christopher James Dozier, was streaming the game live from an overseas deployment. Sgt. Dozier surprised his son with an early return and enjoyed an emotional reunion on live television from the 50-yard line.

“I’ve been in the Corps of Cadets and in the Army Reserve and now I’m currently both,” said College Station native Spc. Logan N. Rath, Public Affairs Broadcast Specialist with the 211th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, stationed in Bryan, Texas. “I find they complement each other. The camaraderie I enjoy in the Corps drives me to succeed in my Army Reserve career.”

From the university website, “Texas A&M University has served student veterans since 1919 and is a national leader in service to our students who are veterans, active duty, military dependents and survivors.”

Through donations and community support, more than 100 veterans and their families watched the home game from Kyle Field, where the Aggies went on to defeat the visiting Blazers 41-20.
