MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – As the holiday season quickly approaches, Marine Corps Exchanges are getting ready for the Black Friday weekend. The MCX Security Department on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is especially ready for the holidays.
“We have the best in the business,” said Dusty Carver, Security Manager for the MCX. “The staff here have a high quality of customer service and are professional about everything.”
The Security Department is responsible for watching the whole complex, which includes the Marine Corps Exchange, barbershops and the Marine Marts.
“We have about seven hundred cameras that we can see remotely,” said Carver. “We have the ability to pull up any screen as we need to. We will also have two to three people watching the monitors and two to three on the floor.”
Those who shoplift have their own excuses, but no matter what the situation may be, it is illegal.
“Shoplifters probably have lack of funds or just can’t afford something,” said a Store Detective for the MCX. “Around this time of year, they probably think their odds of being spotted are lower.”
With the holidays heightening the risk for shoplifting, the security department will have an additional amount of staff behind the cameras and personnel roving around the MCX carrying hand wands to detect sensor tags.
“A lot of people want something for nothing,” said Carver. “They think that we’re not watching as closely as we are. We see all ranks and even family members shoplift. It’s not something that’s worth messing up your career.”
According to Carver, shoplifting will impact more than just the shoplifter’s life.
“No matter what, there will be a payment of $200 for the civil recovery fee,” said Carver. “And that won’t include the damage fee if they have damaged the merchandise.”
After paying the civil recovery fee and being charged with larceny, the processing after that varies between a Marine and a civilian.
“For a Marine, after the initial processing and questioning, the case will then be turned over to their respective command who will then take care of the matter from there,” said Carver. “For everyone else, they will have to give their sponsor’s information, pay the recovery fee and go to the base inspector general.”
