FORT BRAGG, WOMACK ARMY MEDICAL CENTER---More than 1,000 turkeys were given to Soldiers and civilian support staff at Fort Bragg on November 14.
Butterball, headquartered here in Garner, North Carolina, spent the better part of a rainy Wednesday handing out turkeys to the Fort Bragg family.
Marking the sixth year they have come to Fort Bragg this year Butterball partnered through the 3rd Special Forces Group Support Battalion and Womack Army Medical Center to provide 16 pound turkeys for the two commands.
“We have an appreciation for the Thanksgiving holiday and the troops who defend our freedoms,” said Butterball Vice President of Human Resources Ron Tomaszewski. “I was out here last year’s turkey giveaway and I have been watching my calendar to make sure I was out here for this years.”
Many of the junior Soldiers who have taken advantage of the giveaway in the past volunteered to help hand out turkeys this year.
WAMC Ear, Nose and Throat Technician Spc. Lemmy Fojut helped to distribute 400 turkeys to Womack Soldiers and staff.
“I have a wife and two daughters and since I joined the Army giveaways like this made sure my family would have a Thanksgiving,” said Fojut. “I loved that I was able to give back help other Soldiers. It was very fulfilling.”
Before handing out turkeys to Womack Staff Tomaszewski took a tour of WAMC and served turkey to Soldiers during the medical center’s Thanksgiving celebration.
He was impressed with the sheer size of the Fort Bragg Hospital and the dedication he saw in everyone he saw working.
“You can tell the people here love what they do, you can see it all over the hospital,” said Tomaszewski.
Even after the turkeys were all given away cars kept pulling up hoping to get a free bird.
“Don’t worry,” said Tomaszewski. “We’ll be back next year.”
