CAMP MURRAY, Wash.—Master Sgt. Khalilah Oliver, a medical administrator for the Washington Air National Guard’s 194th Medical Group, says she always wanted to join the military.
Oliver enlisted in the Air Force Reserve, completing Basic Military Training in 2001. She did administration work as an individual augmentee for the Air Force shortly after, said Oliver.
In 2008 a friend of Oliver’s had just switched from active duty to active guard reserve with the Washington Air Guard’s 194th Comptroller Flight and raved about her experience, said Oliver. Oliver made the switch from active duty to Guard and has been serving as a healthcare administrator with the 194th Medical Group since.
Oliver said she enjoys “having the opportunity to work with all the Wing members.”
Soon, Oliver will move onto another exciting part of her career where she will serve as the Guard liaison at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas for the next four years, she said. Oliver said she read the description of the position and was excited about taking care of Airmen in a new way. She compares the position to that of a college advisor.
As a liaison, Oliver will help Airmen fresh out of Basic Military Training and prior service members during their technical training for operations intelligence and also fire protection, she said. The responsibilities of the liaison include being a point of contact for members when they need help with many issues that impact their welfare including medical, pay, legal, or personal concerns, said Oliver.
Oliver said her aim is to make sure Airmen are able to do well in training without stressors from the outside world. “My goal is to make sure they are able to transition from basic training to tech school and back home without having issues,” said Oliver.
As for her own career goals, Oliver intends to add on to her degree collection that already includes a Bachelors in Healthcare Administration and a Masters in Healthcare Management with a doctorate.
Oliver plans to return to the 194th Wing after her assignment, she said. “I love working at the 194th Wing and I value everything that I learned from everyone here. And I’m going to do great things and make this wing look good,” she said.
